The Nationals played a game that seemingly would not end today against the Atlanta Braves. The Nationals ended up winning the game in the 15th inning, when Alberto Gonzalez singled and drove in Elijah Dukes. Gonzalez had also scored to tie the game, so he was all the offense the Nationals needed. Not that they didn’t have their chances-the Nationals left 15 men on base including Ian Desmond leaving the bases loaded in the 14th.
As to the record that the Nationals set: by winning this game, they become the only team in Major League history to start the season at 0-7 and finish it at 7-0. Lets hope that is a sign of things to come in 2010.
The Nationals have been through a lot of changes this year. If you lok at the starting line-up from their first game against Florida this is what you see:
MIllidge, CF
Guzman, SS
Zimmerman, 3B
Dunn, LF
Johnson, N 1B
Kearns, RF
Belliard, 2B
Flores, C
Lannan, P
Compare that with today’s:
Maxwell, CF
Desmond, SS
Orr, 3B
Dukes, RF
Morse, 1B
Bard, C
Gonzalez, 2B
Padilla, LF
Martin, P
Now of course since this was the last game of the season, there were some players that were being given a try-out for next year, and Zimmerman, Dunn, and Nieves all pinch-hit or came into the game for good. Certainly, Riggleman wanted to rest his starters for March, but if you look at that openeing day line-up you notice the number of Nats players that aren’t even on the team anymore or who have had their playing time greatly reduced. And, I didn’t even mention the biggest change-Riggleman for Acta.
This brings up the question-what should the Nats line-up look like in April of 2010? I have some ideas and I will share them tomorrow.
